Solution

What Is Intent-Based Networking?

Intent-based networking is a software-driven automation process that uses a high level of intelligence, analytics and orchestration to improve network operations and uptime. As operators describe the business outcomes they want to achieve, the network transforms these goals into the configuration required to achieve them, without the need to manually code and execute individual tasks.

With Apstra, an operator specifies which traffic should use a particular tunnel and describes any other desired general properties of the tunnel. However, the operator does not have to specify how the tunnel should be implemented, e.g., the number of devices to be used, how BGP announcements are to be made or which specific functions and parameters are to be activated.

The intent-based network system automatically generates a complete configuration of all devices based on the service description. It also provides continuous security checks between the intended and operational state of the network.

What Problems Does Intent-Based Networking Solve?

Traditionally, networks have been controlled by manual command-line interface (CLI)-based operations, basic element management systems (EMS) or automation scripts. Most network failures are the result of human error that occurs during these network operations. Intent-based networking reduces errors and risks, and improves operational efficiency in several ways.

  • Validates intent objects before applying them to the network.
  • Instantaneous roll-back or roll-forward of versioned to return to a known good state.
  • Limits the impact and scope of failures during new intent rollout through well-defined policy.
  • Intent-based fallback in the face of outages or device errors by reconfiguring other network elements.

Intent-based networks reduce the time to deliver reliable services from days or weeks to minutes, and help address operational challenges once the infrastructure is in place.

Evolving to Intent-Based Networking

Intent-based networking is not a new concept, but most companies are still on the development path towards it.

Each stage along the way is characterised by increasingly automated and simpler ways of deploying and managing network operations.

1Manual

Operations staff imperatively manage data centre network devices using CLI, SNMP, and basic and discrete tools.

2Semi-automated

Scripts and rules-based management are combined with traditional tools for basic automation, visibility of network data and alerts that enable reaction to network events.

3Software-defined data centre

A software abstraction of the network infrastructure enables faster, secure deployment of services and applications.

4Automation-centric data centre

Builds upon the software-defined data centre by automating provisioning, configuration, deployment and orchestration.

5Intent-based data centre

Continually collects and converts all pertinent data needed to take the automated actions that keep the network aligned with dynamic business intent, data centre conditions and policies.

Intent-Based Analytics

Intent-based analytics keep networks in line with the original business intent throughout the service lifecycle. Intent-based analytics provide insight into network services and enable teams to view their network as a complete service. They enable faster root cause analysis and inform operators of conditions and insights that require attention.
Analytics ensure that network operations are consistent with the original business intent throughout the service lifecycle.
