What Is Intent-Based Networking?

Intent-based networking is a software-driven automation process that uses a high level of intelligence, analytics and orchestration to improve network operations and uptime. As operators describe the business outcomes they want to achieve, the network transforms these goals into the configuration required to achieve them, without the need to manually code and execute individual tasks.

With Apstra, an operator specifies which traffic should use a particular tunnel and describes any other desired general properties of the tunnel. However, the operator does not have to specify how the tunnel should be implemented, e.g., the number of devices to be used, how BGP announcements are to be made or which specific functions and parameters are to be activated.

The intent-based network system automatically generates a complete configuration of all devices based on the service description. It also provides continuous security checks between the intended and operational state of the network.

What Problems Does Intent-Based Networking Solve?

Traditionally, networks have been controlled by manual command-line interface (CLI)-based operations, basic element management systems (EMS) or automation scripts.
